The Humane Society of the United States is attempting to issue the final death blow to the American horse industry under the guise of "food safety." Don't be fooled!
HR 1942/S 1214, also known as the Safeguard American Food Exports Act (SAFE) is legislation which would amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. If passed, this measure would impose fines and prison time for anyone who sells, transports, imports or exports horses going to a humane, regulated horse processing facility.
As indicated by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) report released in June 2011, and as testified by practically every horse industry and agriculture organization in the U.S., the lack of horse processing in the U.S. has exacerbated the suffering of horses, increased the number of needless and wasteful deaths, and has caused more abandonment, neglect, pain, and misery for horses nationwide.
At a time when the U.S. is poised to solve this disgraceful dilemma for horses and the U.S. horse industry, please help us STOP this deceptive bill which would further destroy the U.S. economy, the horse industry, and the welfare of horses.
This measure sets a dangerous precedent to potentially halt the transport of other livestock animals used for food such as beef cattle and pork. Ultimately, the Safeguard American Food Exports Act is an unconstitutional violation of private property.
Write your letters to your Washington, D.C. representatives today and urge them NOT to support this deceptive Act!
